Jace
College isn’t all fun and games, and it gets lonely at the top. Thankfully, I have Pepper. She is the last person I would ever dream of hurting, but when I realize she has the power break my heart, I do the only thing I know. I push her away like I did back in high school, back when I thought she was better off without me. One thing’s becoming clear, I’m not better off without her. I need her. What have I done?

Pepper
I thought everything would fall into place when I started college, instead everything is falling apart. Uncertain of my coach’s expectations or my place amongst new cross country teammates, I’m struggling to redefine my running goals and prove myself. My steady relationship with Jace should be a source of comfort, but his unexplained behavior throws everything between us off track. Running may be the only way to help me get through it, but I’m not running away, not from this new team or from Jace. This freshman is headed for the finish line, and nothing is standing in my way.

Add to Goodreads

I love the story of Pepper and Jace, although this book was a little hard to get through because of all the shit these two are put through.  Pepper starts her freshman year at college, already making friends with her teammates and having fun. Things with Jace are going great, although he lives off campus it is within walking distance.

Like I’ve stated in other reviews it wouldn’t be a good story line with out drama and oh boy there is a lot of that to be had. Pepper needs to grow up, a lot. Jace has a lot to learn about him self. They say you can’t kill love, but Ali Dean does know how to wound us pretty badly.

We meet new people in this continuation of the Pepper and Jace saga, some nice and some not so nice. Pepper and Jace also hit a rough patch after some unforeseen events happen and, as much as some wish said events wouldn’t have happened I can say they were definitely necessary for the story line, more kudos to Ali for tugging at our heart strings…again.

Pepped Up & Ready (Pepper Jones #3) by Ali Dean [Review]

Pepped Up & Ready (Pepper Jones #3)

May 28, 2015

Senior year is finally here, and with it comes a surge in my competitive spirit. I’m determined to defend my national cross-country title. Although Jace is busy with the demands of college football, he’s still cheering me on and supporting my goals. With him by my side and my drive focused like never before, I’m ready to take on the world. But am I taking my renewed enthusiasm for training too far?

As Jace and I focus on our athletic ambitions, we discover that his social status has followed him to college, despite attempts to keep a low profile. With my boyfriend as the campus idol, I fear that I might just be a target to those who find Jace threatening.

Tests and trials lay before us, not just on the trails and field. Are we strong enough to withstand the pressures of everyone wanting something from us? It won’t be easy fighting for my title and my boyfriend, at the same time, but nothing easy is worth winning… or keeping.

As Jace and Pepper focus on their athletic ambitions, they discover that Jace’s social status has followed him to college, despite his attempt to keep a low profile. With her boyfriend as an idol on campus, Pepper discovers that she might just be a target to those who find Jace threatening.

Although Pepper and Jace are just the road from each other, they can’t just walk across the road to the others house and hang out when ever they want. Senior year in high school for Pepper means busting her butt in cross country. Freshman year in college for Jace means proving he isn’t just some high school football player, but that he can actually help the team win more. But what about the people who are out to get Jace and Pepper?
I loved getting to see more of Wes and Pepper together, although I do love when Jace is with them as well, seeing those two reconnect is so nice, especially since we know how things ended for them.

With that said, Ali gave me the spooks a few times in this chapter that is Jace and Pepper. I loved the added suspense to the book, I think that shows that even in the make believe world, things aren’t always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, if you’re too nice to someone, they become obsessed. I also really enjoyed seeing Pepper learn to maneuver her life without being able to run, given that it’s such a big part of her life, struggles happen in books too.

All Pepped Up (Pepper Jones #2) by Ali Dean [Review]

All Pepped Up (Pepper Jones #2)

July 10, 2014

Winning nationals wasn’t the only dream that came true. I also walked away with the heart of the one boy I couldn’t live without. I knew the being Jace Wilder’s girlfriend wouldn’t be simple. But how could I have known all the hurdles we would face?

Drama at school? That’s a given. Jealous girls? That I expected. Family secrets? Not so much. At least I can always hit the trails to clear my head… or so I thought.

The high expectations from my winning cross country season still haunt me, and hold me hostage. I can’t seem to get psyched up for what comes next. My competitive spirit is fading and I’m lost without it. What will I do when my one constant is no longer my safe place? Life on and off the track is spiraling out of control, leaving me in its wake as I struggle to remember who I truly am.

Pepper and Jace are finally together and after two months of secretly dating to avoid hurting Ryan, Peppers ex. They finally go public only for Pepper to suffer the wrath of a very mean girl, someone from Jace’s past, Madeline. Think of the mean girl from your high school, she’ll stop at pretty much nothing to get what she wants…Jace.

With girls like Madeline after her, Pepper feels a little insecure with her relationship, always doubting herself and trying to prove to both her and Jace that he really does want to be with her. Luckily for Pepper, Madeline attends a different school, but unlucky for her, someone in Peppers school wants to be friends with Madeline and will do anything to help end Pepper and Jace.

There is a lot more drama in this book than there was in Pepped Up, but that’s to be expected when one character is semi popular and the other is basically king of his high school, and, what good would a book be with out a little drama?

Ali Dean, kudos to you again, for giving us exactly what we needed for Pepper and Jace’s story line. Ali did wonderful at bringing Jace and Pepper to life for her readers, she also knows how to make her readers laugh and feel the pain that her characters feel. I personally, could read about Pepper and Jace forever.

Pepped Up (Pepper Jones #1) by Ali Dean [Review]

Pepped Up (Pepper Jones #1)

August 25, 2013

Qualifying for Nationals. It’s all I can think about, and I’m willing to do anything it takes to make it happen. I can handle long miles and hill sprints in cross country, but guys? That’s an entirely different challenge.

I’ve kept my feelings hidden from the boy next door all this time. My longtime friend, Jace Wilder doesn’t see me that way. He has the personal magnetism and good looks to hook just about any girl in town — and he has. Our friendship stands apart from high school social circles, and I’m fine with that, or so I keep telling myself.

That is, until running star Ryan Harding moves to town and bridges the gap. Apparently, I’ve caught his eye and suddenly Jace starts seeing me in a different light. Everything changes, for all of us.

On the trails, my goals are clear. Train, run, breathe, run, win. But when it comes to Jace and Ryan, it’s nowhere near as simple. This battle can’t be won by crossing a finish line, this war is in my heart.

Add to Goodreads

Pepper Jones is a runner, that is what her life revolves around. She has never had a boyfriend or even desired to have one, unless you count her infatuation with her best friend Jace. But, everything changes when Ryan comes to town.

Since Jace started high school and made new friends, Pepper knows less and less about her best friend and although they have always been best friends, he’s a popular guy and has more than Pepper in his life. Jace has always been overly protective when it comes to Pepper, never wanting her to party or drink so when she starts to go out more, he all but loses control of his life.

Pepper and Jace have that friendship most would die for, the one’s that have lasted since diapers, except for Pepper, she’s been infatuated with Jace for years and every time he chooses to go be with someone else, it hurts. With Ryan in town now, Jace is sending mixed signals, almost like he has feeling for her.

Props to Ali Dean for writing such a fantastic book. I laughed and my heart ached when ever Pepper was upset. With running being such a big part of her life, what’s a girl to do when she’s confused? Run. And she does with her trusty side kick Dave.

Weightless by Kandi Steiner [Review]

Weightless
Kandi Steiner
June 16, 2016

I remember the lights.
I remember I wanted to photograph them, the way the red and blue splashed across his cold, emotionless face. But I knew even if my feet could move from the place where they had cemented themselves to the ground and I could run for my camera, I wouldn’t be able to capture that moment.
I had trusted him, I had loved him, and even though my body had changed that summer, he’d made sure to help me hold on to who I was inside, regardless of how the exterior altered.
But then everything changed.
He stole my innocence. He scarred my heart. He took everything I thought I knew about my life and fast-pitched it out the window, shattering the glass that held my world together in the process.
I remember the lights.
The passionate, desperate, hot strikes of red. The harsh, cruel, icy bolts of blue.
They symbolized everything I endured that summer.
And everything I would never face again.

Add to Goodreads

This book. For the last hour that it took me to finish it all I could think about was reviewing this wonderful, amazing, heart breaking book. I met Kandi before I had ever read her books and even after that it took me almost a year after meeting her to read even one of her books, but once I read one I had to read the next, and then I heard this book was coming out and I pre-ordered it, simply because it was on sale and I knew with out a doubt that this book would be amaze balls.

When I first started this book I was super curious on what the synopsis meant, who’s face was emotionless? Why the lights were flashing the way it’s described? Why her body changed so much in one summer? Of course my first thought with that was that this unnamed girl was pregnant. Wouldn’t that be your first thought?

It took me way longer to read this book than I hoped for, I’m the type of girl that can start and finish a book in less than a day, but of course I work crazy hours so adulting got the best of me. Every time I had to stop all I did every spare second at work was think about this fantastic book and what was going to happen next or over analyze what had already happened.

If there is one thing this book has taught me about Kandi’s writing abilities is that she definitely knows how to throw you for a loop. Let me tell you, I was not expecting the twist that came. Kandi made me fall deeply in love with these characters.

When you first meet Natalie, she is described to be a little bit more on the heavier side, all of her friends are way slimmer than she is and her self confidence is extremely low, but she has her mom and step dad that she loves and they love her. But she also just had her boyfriend break up with her and immediately start dating someone new. Personally I would be super suspicious about that but this is just a book and she is only eighteen years old. When her mom suggests she work out with the personal trainer at the gym she hates the idea, but then something happens and she decides to go for it.

This brings in Rhodes.

Gorgeous, panty dropping, brooding Rhodes. This man is described as the town bad boy, sexy and very drool worthy. But he has a bit of a history, a past with juvie, a lot of female clients, and he rides a motorcycle. I would work out with him too.

The feels are so real.

As time goes on, Natalie and Rhodes work together and become closer. She loses weight, becomes a stronger person and then some more bad shit happens. Forgive me, I don’t want to give any important things away. Then comes the twist no one can see coming. At least I certainly did not see that coming, blindsided I was. It happens at the end of the book, the last few chapters, but there is a hint not too far into it, how I missed this is beyond me. Maybe I was a little too in love with Rhodes.

It is so hard not to type out the twist and give it all away, I want so badly to scream it, or rather type in all caps and tell you what happened. But I would like you to go through all the feels of this book. THE FEELS ARE REAL!

Please do yourself a favor and go one click this book. Right. Now.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. Beyond Eighteen (Wilson Mooney #3) by Gretchen de la O [Review]

Beyond Eighteen (Wilson Mooney #3)
Gretchen de la O
October 1, 2013

Max Goldstein has been confronted by death, betrayal, and unwanted expectations. He must work to find the delicate balance of a love that has been tested and a family that has been broken. Returning to the warmth of Wilson’s arms, he finds the only place he can be truly healed. Unfortunately, teetering on the edge of losing everything he’s ever wanted, Max must make decisions that pull at his sense of responsibility and push at his desire to protect the life he’s found with Wilson.

When Wilson Mooney is thrust into adulthood, she never expects her childhood demons to come knocking. Struggling to balance the delicate nature of her relationship with Max and the burning sting of betrayal; Wilson realizes she must dig deep within her soul to find forgiveness. Will she allow circumstances out of her control to shape her future? Or will she find the strength and maturity to go beyond eighteen and have the life she desires with the man she loves?

Will Wilson and Max ever get to have their happily ever after?

Add to Goodreads

Wilson, Wilson, Wilson. What am I going to do with you? I know she was forced into telling Max about the kiss she shared with Nick because of Cindy, that spiteful bitch. I feel some what bad for talking bad about a teenage girl, but she’s a straight up bitch. I feel like Wilson has cried so so much, her face and nose must be raw at this point and she’s still crying. Yes I know, it’s a terrible thing to go through and I would probably cry that much too. But, I can’t imagine what I would be dealing with for the next few days.

Honestly, I don’t think anyone can blame the poor girl, in such a short time she lost the two most important people to her, the people who raised her. Yes, they put her in boarding school but it was probably for the best. Then she meets Max and they end up secretly dating and she falls in love with his family, to have something you never really had would be amazing. Then Frank dies and their secret is out, in the span of 24 hours Frank dies and then Calvin tells everyone the truth. It’s all so fast and there really isn’t any time, I’d deal with it the same way.

She thought she had lost Max for good when stupid Cindy insinuated that something was going on with Nick, leave it to Cindy to do that. Of course that’s not the end of it either. So much happens in this book too, I love that Gretchen can pack so much drama into these books. I needed popcorn to get through them and we didn’t have any, so I settled for pretzel sticks, whatever works, right? I do suggest that you have some sort of snack to get through these books though.

Eighteen at Last (Wilson Mooney #2) by Gretchen de la O [Review]

Eighteen at Last (Wilson Mooney #2)
Gretchen de la O
November 3, 2012

Chained by unfortunate timing and restricted by society’s expectations, every choice Wilson and Max make becomes pivotal to their future together.

Eager to take their relationship to the next level, Wilson returns to Aspen with Max to celebrate her eighteenth birthday. When an uncontrollable situation leads to a split-second decision, both will be tested like never before. Butterflies will soar, hearts will clash, and Wilson’s relationship with Max will spin into a silken cocoon with choices that seem too impossible to overcome.

Could it be…uncovering the deep ache that lays dormant in their hearts will become the real threat to their forbidden love? Or will the pressures of keeping their relationship a secret be too much to bear?

Add to Goodreads

Wilson is finally eighteen, you would think it’d solve a lot of issues, but no. Max is still her teacher and she’s still crushing, hard. Luckily, he’s crushing just as hard back on her. He decides to surprise her with a trip to Aspen for her birthday, it being the first year with out her grandparents and being born on Christmas is hard. Luck seems to be on her side since the Goldstein’s are Jewish, so her birthday is just hers.

The Goldstein family welcomes Wilson with open arms, trying to make this the best birthday yet, Max takes her downtown to see the 12 days of Aspen even though he’s Jewish and doesn’t celebrate Christmas. When they get back to his house, it’s time for what they’ve been waiting for. Wilson is now 18, even though she’s still his student, she’s at the legal age of consent they can finally go all the way. Or so we thought. Something terrible happens to the Goldstein family and unfortunately Wilson is shut out in a way.

My heart aches for Wilson after something else happens, it’s like this girl can’t catch a break. I want to wrap her up in a blanket and just rock back and forth with her. So many bad events happen in Wilson’s life, that it feels like there’s never any good happening to her, but she has so much good in her life, she just needs to try and look past the bad and I know that’s really difficult to do when you’re just barely 18 years old and you’ve had bad things happening for so long.

Almost Eighteen (Wilson Mooney #1) by Gretchen de la O [Review]

Almost Eighteen (Wilson Mooney #1)
Gretchen de la O
September 6, 2011

Abandoned by her mother at the vulnerable age of eight; only to be shipped off to a boarding school in Northern California by her grandparents, Wilson Mooney, is one girl who knows what it’s like to have to grow up way too fast. Now, a month away from turning eighteen and orphaned by the death of her grandparents; she knows exactly what she wants. All it takes is a spontaneous ski trip with her narcissistic roommate to Colorado to make it a reality. When “he” happens to show up at a party in Aspen, Wilson becomes tangled in the powerful emotions of first love, sexual inexperience, and society’s principles. She lives a whirlwind weekend filled with newly discovered boundaries, calloused aches for a family she never had, and all the pressures of keeping their weekend together a secret.

Add to Goodreads

Wilson Mooney has a crush, that’s normal for any 17 year old girl, especially if you’re at an all girls boarding school. Wilson’s crush? That would be her government teacher, Max Goldstein.

Her best friend Joanie is pretty much all she’s got, not family by blood but still family. Her roommate Cindy is a brat, living off of daddies money and thinking she’s hot shit. So when she all but traps Wilson into going with her to aspen for a weekend of skiing, she can’t really say no. Except she doesn’t know how to ski. When they get there, she learns about “seasonal friends” and how Cindy lives in Aspen, quite nice from the sounds of it. When she throws a house party the first night they’re there and Cindy’s half brother invites his friend you wouldn’t think anything wrong, right? True that nothing could be wrong with that, only one friend, no big deal, except that friend also brings his older brother Max along. Yep, Max Goldstein.

Do you see the problem yet? Let me break it down, first there’s the fact that he’s a teacher. Second, there are underage girls there, drinking. Third, he’s a teacher who could have supplied the alcohol or that he also has a crush but can’t do anything about it…
Most of that happens within the first 25% of the book, so you can imagine what could possibly happen with the other 75% of the book.

I really liked everything about this book, but not it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Wilson and Max, they definitely have an interesting story line.

Stay (Keaton #3) by B. A. Wolfe [Review]

Stay (Keaton #2)
BA Wolfe
October 18, 2014

Fate took Cassandra down a path she never expected.

Then a small town in Colorado gave her exactly what she needed—until tragedy left her heartbroken and devastated. Alone with only her child and her memories, Cassie struggled to put her life back together, one day at a time, piece by piece. Finding love again was something she never thought possible. That was, until she ran into an unlikely stranger who flipped her entire world on its axis.

Aidan had a secret locked away in his heart; one that would surely send Cassie running the second she discovered it. He held onto her closely and kept his secret guarded, but one careless mistake could reveal all.

Their friendship was strong, their moments beautiful, and the love that brewed between them intense—something neither denied. The only problem? Cassie was slowly letting him into her life. Could she let herself get close to the one person she didn’t think she should?
Her mind tells her to run, but her heart tells her to stay.

*Stay is part of the Keaton Series and should be read in order*

Please, please do not read this if you have not read Away yet!

Dan feels like he failed his baby brother. He’s the Batman to his Robin, he was supposed to protect him, but you can only do so much for someone with kidney failure.
Not only was Dan the guy Cassie runs into when running off of the elevator, he was also the guy to wrap his arms around her when she breaks down in front of his casket. And in that moment…it was just the two of them, learning how to breathe again.

When Cassie finally returns to Keaton after a whole year away, she realizes “Aidan” is actually Jase’s older brother Dan who it was she ran into in the coffee shop, making it a tense and awkward realization. It was also a sad moment, because a girl like Cassie, with the life she grew up in, needs people like Bart and Trish around. Luckily in the year that she stayed away, she still had Mel and Moose. When you lose someone important to you, like Jase, it’s a necessity to have people in your life looking out for you.

This is another very well written book by B. A. Wolfe and as sad as I was at the end of Away, I needed this, I highly recommend reading this series!

Away (Keaton #1) by B. A. Wolfe [Review]

Away (Keaton #1)
B. A. Wolfe
December 6, 2013

What good is running AWAY when you only end up lost?

Cassandra Pierce had her whole “perfect” life planned out by her parents. One night of pure weakness and lust has her running away from it all and seeking refuge in Alamosa with her best friend. But it seems life has other plans for her when she finds herself lost in the small town of Keaton.

Jason Bradley is a charming country guy. He lives a simple life that’s nothing like what Cassandra is used to. A single moment in life changed everything he thought he once knew, leaving him with a broken heart and an unplanned future.

What happens in Keaton is nothing Cassandra or her heart could have ever prepared for. The instant connection she shares with Jason is no secret, but what they’re keeping hidden from one another is. Will these two be able to find a way to trust each other or will their secrets tear them apart?

Add to Goodreads

Ugh okay, I don’t think I’m mentally prepared to review this book and its been years since I’ve read it. This book will crush you, you’ll need tissues, your choice of alcohol, if you drink and chocolate to make it through this one.

When Cassandra runs away, she doesn’t mean to end up in the small town of Keaton, she tried to go to the comfort of her best friend Mel, unlucky for her, she doesn’t really know which way to go and neither does her GPS, thus landing her in Keaton after hitting a tree. Thankfully, with it being such a small town Jason is there to help her. Cassie, of course trying to be independent says she doesn’t need any help, but Jase isn’t that person that will just say “Okay.” and walk away.

I loved everything about this book, Cassie and Jase had an almost instant connection, and it only grew the longer she was stuck in Keaton. I especially loved Jase’s mom and dad, who opened their home up to this stranger and gave her a sense of what a real home should feel like. Her best friend Mel is there for her, not always in front of her, but even distance can’t kill a friendship as strong as theirs. Moose, Jase’s best friend, he’s quite the character.

I’ve often said, for my own life, that just because you may not always get to choose your own family, doesn’t mean you can’t choose your friends, and eventually they too become your family.
