What He Doesn’t Know March 15, 2018

WHDK cover FINAL_1

On the northeast side of town, there is a house.

The house was once magical, filled with love and joy and plans for the future. Inside its walls are many things that belong to me — my books, the china from my mother on my wedding day, the beautiful cage once home to two birds, now empty, just like me.

And a man.

A man who also belongs to me.

A man I no longer wish to keep.

A man who, no doubt, has not slept, though the sun is rising. Because the house where he waits is where I laid my head to rest every night for eight years. Until last night.

No one who knows me would believe Charlie Pierce, the quiet, bookish girl who never made waves is pulling out of the driveway of a man who isn’t her husband.

But they don’t know me at all.

I don’t even know me.

Not anymore.

They say there are two sides to every story, and I suppose in most cases, that’s true. But the one I live inside of? It has three.

On the northeast side of town, there is a house.

But there is no longer a home.

What He Always Knew March 29, 2018

WHAK cover FINAL_1

Left or right.

It’s that simple, and it isn’t simple at all.

If I turn left, the road will lead me back to the man I promised my life to, the one I’d imagined building a family with, the one who’s done everything in his power to get me back.

If I turn right, the road will take me to the man I loved first, the man who brought me back to life, the man who would do anything to keep me.

I knew the fork in the road was inevitable; it was the decision I never wanted to make between choices I didn’t know I had.

And I love them both.

My heart is destined to exist in two equal halves — one with each man. But one half beats stronger, the vein running deepest, and holds my choice in silence long before I know it for myself.

The realization of what I have to do, of the heart I have to break, just might break mine too.

Left or right.

All I have to do is take a breath and turn.

Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. No Way In Hell by Jordan Bates [Cover Reveal]

No Way In Hell (The Ink Well Chronicles #2)
Jordan Bates
March 23, 2018
Romantic Comedy

Two years.
Who kisses someone and then doesn’t say anything for two years?
Greg Moran, that’s who.

That kiss might not have started it all, but it sure did change everything. I thought I was living a simple life, keeping to my friends, eating pickles with ice cream, drinking bourbon on the weekends, and taking naps after work. Looking back at it all now, it was anything but simple.

What happens in Vegas was supposed to stay there.

But clearly, this time it wasn’t.
I married Greg Moran.
My best friend. My boss.
The man who I had loved for five years.

Two years of silence broke me though. It caused me to do something no sane woman in love would do.

I asked for a divorce.

Love and the right timing were two things I didn’t believe in.
Love is about walking to the edge of the cliff and taking the leap together.

Timing was never on our side.

My first mistake was hooking up with my best friend.
My second came years later, when we met again, and I fell for her.

My third was letting her go, because I had to. Because a love like this wasn’t built to withstand the winds coming in our direction.

Love and timing.
I didn’t believe in either.
Then there was you . . .

“There’s no one at my parent’s house except for me.” He raised an eyebrow. “My brother is moving from his apartment to a bigger house, so he’s been going by there to pick up the last of his things, but that’s about it. I’ve barely seen him.” I frowned. “So why are you staying there?” And where were his parents living? I didn’t want to ask this, of course, but I was dying to know.

“I’m waiting for construction on my apartment building to be complete. It should be move-in ready by October.”

“Hm.”

All sorts of questions popped into my head, but I pushed them aside. They’d go unasked because I didn’t want to answer any more of his. Thankfully, he clicked for the iron gates that guarded his house to open and drove in, not pushing for an answer. My eyes stayed glued on those gates as we drove past them. They were like something out of a Richie-Rich movie, those gates, black with a gold emblem in the center. I’d seen them countless times, pushed them open in the middle of the night more times than I could count. I tore my eyes away and looked up at the house. I hadn’t expected to feel such gripping emotion over a damn gate, but I guess some things never stop piercing your heart, no matter how much time passed.

“I’ll be right out.”

I nodded once and leaned against the seat before he jogged inside. I closed my eyes, trying to figure out how my trip had gone from closing a chapter in my life to being stuck in the middle of my epilogue. When Grandma Joan called me with a guilt trip, telling me to come spend a couple of weeks with her, I’d taken her up on the offer for two reasons: I was the only one left who hadn’t packed her room and taken the boxes to the storage unit, and I missed her and this place. I missed the days I used to come here and feel like I was home. I missed the slow pace that came with a life here in Ithaca, nestled inside the city, but surrounded by nature and the water.

Thinking about those days also brought memories of Rowan. Kissing Rowan, holding hands with him, laughing with him in our canoes, but with the positive came the negative. He and I were never meant to be more than friends, and even friends was questionable. Friends didn’t lie or omit important things. My eyes popped open when I heard the front door shut. I watched him take the steps two at a time and stride toward me.

He slid into the driver’s seat, dropped one of the two bottles of water he’d been carrying into my lap, and shot me a wink. I scowled, clutching the water and facing forward. Just because I’d taken him up on the ride didn’t mean we were suddenly going to be chums again. Far from it. I wouldn’t fall for those mischievous eyes. I wouldn’t fall for the panty-dropping grin either. I wouldn’t fall. Not again.

Elite (Privileged #2) by Carrie Aarons [Release Blitz & Review]

Elite (Privileged #2)
Carrie Aarons

New Adult Romance
February 18, 2018

If you’re in, you’ll never have to ask. If you ask, you’ll never be in.

Eloise Mason knows what it’s like to live among the privileged. Seek a change from the upper crust society of Europe, she flies halfway across the world for a semester abroad in the one place guaranteed to toss responsibility out the window and provide some good, old fashioned fun; college in The United States.

Except nothing at the picturesque, Ivy-covered university in Vermont appears as it seems. And after a mysterious invitation arrives on her doorstep, curiosity wins over the need to turn her back on games meant for the rich and ruthless.

Secret societies, risky tasks, and an inner circle to rival the royals. But it may just be one American boy who threatens to be the most dangerous endeavor of all.

Colton Reiter defines the word idolized at Jade Mountain University. In fact, he practically rules the roost from the three point line of the basketball court. The college’s star point guard, he is a god and treated as such; professional scouts at every game, teachers looking the other way when it comes to grades, and girls falling into his lap at the snap of a finger. He wants for nothing, or at least that’s what he wants everyone to believe.

But when he meets the sassy girl with the British accent who could care less about his status, her very existence threatens to unveil the skeletons buried deep in the back of his closet.

With stakes this high, and hearts on the line, can they turn their backs on power and popularity before the ivory tower comes crashing down on their heads?

You guys, this book was amazing.

I know, I know, I say this about damn near every book I’ve read, but it’s true. Have you read Privileged yet? Yes? Okay good. No? That’s also okay. But if you did, do you remember Eloise? This is her book, and unlike or maybe like you, I just met her last week and I loved her in Privileged and I loved her even more in Elite. Things to know about Elite; this book takes place a few years after Privileged, so while we do have a small part where we hear from Asher and Nora, it’s not enough to be a big spoiler and you can still read about them after this.

Like the other two Carrie Aarons books I’ve read (I know, only two? I’m working on it) she gives us the added edge and suspense by giving us both sides to the story with alternate POV from Colton and Eloise, we know that they both have secrets and even though they really aren’t relationship type people, but they seem to click really well, fitting together like two sides of a coin. But then on top of that, Eloise is only there for the semester..Seems like there isn’t much of a chance for a future, or will something else stop them all together?

This should definitely be your next read and whats even better? It’s free on KU, so hop on that. But if you’re like me and can’t really afford that monthly $9.99, you can always do a free trial!

Eat hot dogs on the steps of The Met: Check.

Behind the Bars
Brittainy Cherry

Contemporary Romance
December 7th, 2017

When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen.
The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness.
Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth.
Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find.
And in a flash, she was gone.
Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans.
She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated.
Caged.
Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her.
Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again.
When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops.
When we met again, she was the darkest storm.

BehindtheBarsTeaser1

Brittainy Cherry loves giving us all the feels in her “rom-coms” and I have no doubt she’ll do it again, if the dedication is any sign. I was only 2% in and I already felt it.
Feelings.
They were coming for me.

“That’s when I saw the boy who played the music. I’d always say I saw him first, but he’d argue that was a lie. Technically I didn’t see him at first–I felt him, felt his music crawl along my skin. The chords and bars of his saxophone sent chills down my spine. It sounded magical, the way the notes dance through the air, so hauntingly beautiful. He played as if he were bleeding out into the streets of New Orleans. He left nothing on the table and gave his music his all. In that moment, I realized I never gave anything my all–not like him, not like that.”

I’ve often said, usually with the help of my friend, that Brittainy is the destroyer of my soul. She crushes me, in the best and worst ways and then picks up all the pieces and puts my soul back together, only for me to pick up her next book and have it happen all over again. As is, I was only on chapter two and had started tearing up. I knew, it would get so much worse.

One thing I’ve always hated about those relationships where a kid is from a previous relationship is the way that the biological parent has the power to throw it in the others face, that the child isn’t theirs. That should never, ever be a thing. It takes a lot for a person to step into the role as parent, if the bio mom or dad left, or worse, died, they have big shoes to fill, but they choose to be in this kids life. That being said, Heather’s continuous use of throwing it in Rays face irks me. Ray is more than a parent than even Heather is, he listens to what Jasmine wants and loves her, unconditionally.

Immediately starting the first chapter for Elliot, my heart ached. Bullies are stupid, though I’m sure I’ve bullied people before, but never ever like Todd or anyone else who bullies poor Elliot. But I love Jasmine, even more for talking to him as she’s supposed to be a popular girl, a mean girl, as his sister would say. Not all popular girls are mean, we know that Katie is just trying to protect her brother but we also know Jasmine means no harm. I want to grab one of the softest blankets I can find and wrap Elliot up in it, holding him as tight as I can until he knows it’s safe. High school can be a cruel, cruel place and for someone like Elliot with a stuttering problem, it’s only going to be worse. After hearing what happened last year, I wanted to vomit. No one should ever have to go through these things, But Jasmine being nice to him makes me so happy, he needs a friend. I think they both need it.

“And then he whispered ‘You’ll be okay.’
How had he known?
How had he known my biggest fear was that I wouldn’t be okay?”

And at that moment, I started crying, with Sam Smith blaring in the background because I’m obsessed with his music. Brittainy Cherry has a way with words, she has this way with crushing you, but making it seem like you asked for it and I guess in a way we do because we choose to read this piece of her soul, she chose to share her soul with us in hopes we’d read it and we chose to, so we ask for the pain that comes with her twisted version of rom-coms.

It was the end of chapter six that really got me crying, I’m talking stuffy nose and red face. I’ve been bullied a little, back when I was in high school, for stupid things, like my height. I’ve felt a lone a lot, but I’ve never ever felt the way Eliot does, Jasmine makes it better, but she wasn’t around for this one. She’s never around anymore when he’s bullied. That’s how bullies are smart and a comment of Todd’s makes me wonder if it’s true, and then finding out that it was…makes my heart ache so much more.

I threatened Brittainy, told her that before I could read another one of her books I’d need her to send tissues to my house. It always seems that when I start a Brittainy Cherry book, I may have enough tissues to last and every single time I’m wrong. So now, per my request, she has to mail me tissues when a new book is due to come out.

I think you’ll like to see some of the non spoiling messages I sent Brittainy while reading this soul crushing book.

“My fucking heart, you’re destroying it already and I’m not even 10% in! I don’t like you…I mean, I love you, but I don’t like you.”
‘You’re the worst and best thing for my soul.”
“Your words are just so magical.”

There are a few messages sent after that are a pretty huge spoiler, but she asked me
“Do you hate meeeee?”
“Yes.”
“And I can’t stop crying now.”
“And I haven’t turned the page yet.”

I might be a little dramatic with the way I send messages, but I can’t apologize for that.

After that my friend and I started plotting some deaths, rightfully so. Once I made it to part two things got a little bit better. I cried a little bit more, but no where near as hard as I did in part one.

YOU. NEED. TO. READ. THIS.

As Long As You Hate Me by Carrie Aarons [Release Blitz & Review]

As Long As You Hate Me
Carrie Aarons
Contemporary Romance
December 3, 2017

Kara
High school sweethearts. What a load of bull.

He might have been my first love, but it never meant I wanted to hear lyrics containing my name, love story, and *cringe* how I lost my virginity peddled out for the masses to digest.

Seven years later, and I’m still being haunted by his photo in every magazine, his music on every radio station. I thought breakups meant that you never had to see the person again. Especially when they ripped out your heart and made hamburger meat with it.

But when a chance encounter ends up going viral, I’m tied to him in a way I’ve always dreaded. And the last person on earth I’d want to spend an hour with, much less a lifetime, makes me an offer I can’t refuse. I might just be desperate enough to take it.

Dean
The girl in the song is real. And she’s made me a rich man.

I’ve been dedicating choruses to her for a decade, she’s the muse she never wanted to be. Off of our love, I’ve become famous … and a complete egomaniac.

When another one of my flings goes off the rails, and lands me in hot water with the media, my recording label is less than thrilled. And so comes the marching orders from my agent; devise a scheme to transform into a squeaky clean good guy.

Coming face to face with her is something I’ve only dreamed about. If not to win her back, then to at least apologize for the ways I’ve exploited her. Instead, I rope her into my madness, proposing a deal only a masochist would accept.

Add to Goodreads

Okay, I have to start with that this is my first Carrie Aarons book and I think I just fell in love.

Oh Dean and Kara, your love story is one of a kind. I’ve always wished I had a high school sweetheart, even if it didn’t work out. When we first meet them, they’re still in high school, talking about what’ll happen when Dean makes it big. When, not if. Kara is so, so supportive of Dean, even if it means they’ll be thousands of miles apart, she just wants him to be happy.

Relationships take a lot of work, a successful relationship doesn’t always mean no fights or arguments, it means that you’ll talk things through and make sure you know the whole story to something. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?) when some incriminating evidence turns up, Kara doesn’t listen to his side of the story and instead ends things completely, with him not even fully knowing what happened.

These second chance romances are some of my favorites. I mean, I love all romances, I live my love life vicariously through all of the romance stories I read. But I especially love when its a rekindled love. It’s always a fun time to see how these contract relationships end up. Years pass for Kara and Dean, seven to be exact, but who’s counting? Kara still sees his image splashed across magazines. His songs on the radio, songs that are about her. Lyrics about their love and how they lost their virginity. Everyone knew the songs were all about one girl, but no one knew who, until they’re thrown back together.

Someone always falls back in love or in love for the first time when its a contract relationship, right? Because when it comes down to these relationships there is always some kind of connection prior to signing on the dotted line, whether it’s someone you’ve crushed on for years, someone you dated say, seven years ago and they crushed your heart or someone you thought you were over and it turns out your heart has lied to you all this time. I mean, if we really really think about it and someone like Dean Jacobs wanted to write songs about me and sing them to me, I’d be his fake fiance too. (This is a heads up to any singers out there that may read this, Dean Jacobs, are you real?)

Carrie writes phenomenally, I think I need to run and buy all her other books. Of course, if you read any romance type story you know there is always a moment where they fall apart, but Carrie surprised me. It didn’t go down like I thought. This whole book was epic-ally (is that a word?) wrote and I love it, all of it. The angst, the heart ache, the happy go lucky parts.

When she isn’t writing, Carrie is busy binging reality TV, having a love/hate relationship with cardio, and trying not to burn dinner. She’s a Jersey girl living in Texas with her husband, daughter and furry son.

On the Way to You, an all-new emotional standalone from Kandi Steiner is LIVE!

What makes you happy?

That was the question Emery Reed asked me the day we met, and I couldn’t give him a single answer. I could have said my dog, or my books, or yoga — but I just stared.

And then, I got in his car.

It was crazy to take a road trip with a stranger, but after years of standing still, he was my one-way ticket to a new life, and I wasn’t going to miss it.

We shared the same space, the same car, the same hotel room — and still, we were strangers.

One day we’d be laughing, the next, we wouldn’t speak. Emery was surrounded by impenetrable walls, but I wanted in.

Discovering his journal changed everything.

I read his thoughts, words not meant for anyone’s eyes, and the more I learned about him, the harder I fell. It turned out nothing made Emery Reed happy, and I wanted to change that.

I earned his trust by violating his privacy, and as wrong as it was, it worked — until one entry revealed a darkness I never knew existed, a timer I never knew was ticking.

Suddenly, what made me happy was saving Emery from himself. I just didn’t know if I could.

What makes you happy?

If someone asked me that question, I don’t know that I’d have an answer for them. Like Cooper, I’m stuck, if given the chance to jump in a car with a stranger and drive across the country to my dream school, I would absolutely do it.

“You are dying in this town. Not your body, but your soul. Life isn’t supposed to be safe, if it was, they wouldn’t call it living. They’d just call it existing. And you’ve existed long enough, baby girl. It’s time to live.”

I love Tammy, I was only a few pages in and I had already fallen in love with her. I have to agree that it’s probably a good thing she never had kids, I don’t know any mother (except mine) that would urge their kid to jump into a car with a stranger.

I have a very strong dislike for Cindy, then again something tells me if she weren’t that way then Cooper might not have the dream of leaving, never to return. If Cindy was actually a Mother, instead of a druggie then she might actually be sad about leaving. That’s not to say Darryl is any better, because I hate him too. Of course, it gets worse. Doesn’t it always get worse, when you hate a character so much, there’s always worse.

Cooper learns a lot in the first few days of her trip with Emery. He has bad days and good days, I think everyone does, some more than others. The thing is, you have to learn to accept those days, it may not always be easy but the good always outweigh the bad.

I fell in love with these characters the way I imagine when someone falls in love with their significant other, one of those insta romances, that was me. I needed to know the story, I stayed up late and I read. Even now, I still have this book so fresh, that’s how Kandi works.

I think the best time to write a review is right after you’ve finished, when the book is still fresh on your mind. This was the best book I’ve read yet, definitely Kandi’s best book. It was an emotional roller coaster, I laughed and of course cried, I cried so much. I’m not okay, but I’m okay with that. Does that make sense to anyone else? My heart was obliterated, nothing left but dust. It wasn’t just the characters that crushed my heart, it was Kandi herself. If there was any book you wanted to read, it should be this one. 100% with out a doubt.

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL.

She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.
