Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas [Review]

Birthday Girl
Penelope Douglas
Contemporary Romance
April 17, 2018

Jordan

He took me in when I had nowhere else to go. He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.

I have to stop this. It can’t happen.

My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable. Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.
I am.

PIKE

I took her in, because I thought I was helping. As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.

But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.

And her boyfriend’s father.

Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

*BIRTHDAY GIRL is a stand-alone, contemporary romance suitable for ages 18+.

I’ve had this book on my TBR since before it released and I’ve owned this book for probably just as long. Penelope has been posting teasers/excerpts recently and I kept saying it was time for me to finally read this book. Before this, I’ve only read her Fall Away series, but after another small excerpt posted, I didn’t even make it half way through, closed Facebook and opened Birthday Girl. If I hadn’t had to work, eat or sleep, I’d probably have read non stop, but some of the chapters are long and I’ve been very antsy lately.

Birthday Girl is a good book, I would say a very good book. I know some people have different opinions though and that’s okay too. I will say that I think Jordan is a bit childish in some parts, but when you’ve had the life she has, I think we can give her a pass or two. I do love that she grew up along the span of the book, I love to watch a characters growth, whether it be in a book or a TV show or movie. She’s spunky, sassy and has a good amount of attitude throughout the book, but she’s also been handed a lousy card.

Pike, where do I start with Pike? He’s something else and I’ve got to say I loved it. I loved to see his progression through the book too, though I will also add in that he’s an idiot and doesn’t fully let the thought form in his head before the words leave his mouth. Like most men, right? I love reading the scenes when he’s working or building something new. But, I also love the scenes where its raining heavily and he needs help sandbagging, when Jordan tags along, especially that first time. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll leave it at that.

As for the other characters in the book, I love Dutch and the way he says “sugar” I can just hear it in my head. I have a love and hate relationship with Cole, mostly hate until almost the end of the book, and I despise Lindsay, don’t even get me started on parents like her. I also will say that Jay got way less than he deserved, I’d have liked Pike to keep his promise on that one…And I wish he groveled more.

Rachael lives in Michigan with her husband, son, snuggly dog, and hateful cat. When she’s not writing her next novel, you can find her hanging out with her family, watching her son play baseball, or running on the treadmill at the gym (though she skips more days than she goes). She also enjoys golfing but is still learning, so if you see her on the course… stand back.

Eastern Lights (Compass #1) by Brittainy Cherry [Review]

Eastern Lights (Compass #2)
Brittainy Cherry
February 17, 2021
Cover Designer: Hang Le
Photographer: Michelle Lancaster @lanephotograf
Model: Heath Hutchins

I once met a man on a cold Halloween night. He dressed as a superhero, and I dressed in red. For one night, I was his break from reality, and he was the temporary fix for my broken heart.

Two years later, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to become a senior editor at one of the biggest magazine companies in the world. The only catch? Nail an exclusive interview with New York’s finest bachelor: Connor Roe.

To the rest of the world he was becoming one of the wealthiest men in New York City. To me, he was simply my once upon a time superhero.

My job was to get an exclusive interview with New York’s hottest bachelor. Never in my life did I expect him to want an exclusive with my heart, too.

The only problem with my growing feelings for him? I was set to marry his new business partner.

Add to Goodreads

Y’all, I hope you’ve read Eastern Lights already, but it’s okay to just tell me you hated Connor in Southern Storms and never want to hear from him again. Okay, okay, I’m just being a tad dramatic but I freakin love Connor. I was all aboard the Connor getting his own book train. And the best part? It’s almost a BCherry rom-com. Just a little less sad Brittainy and you’ll be there!

I fell in love with Aaliyah from the very beginning, my heart ached for her, like it does with every single BCherry character, but I had hope that this would turn out in the way we needed it to. My heart also ached with Connor, but I made it to 79%, chapter 36b before I actually cried. I made it to 87% in Southern Storms before tears fell, otherwise I teared up in all of the flashbacks in Eastern Lights.

Connor goes through his fair share of let downs, but he stays true to his southern roots and silly-ness that was what made us fall in love with him in Southern Storms, that’s definitely important to his story line. I know that some people need tragic things to happen and it changes them for the worse and later we find out what, why and it makes sense but I am forever going to love that Connor didn’t change.

Connor and Aaliyah have a friendship to lovers feel and that’s one of my favorite genres to read, I know we can see the attraction from the beginning, but I love that it’s some what of a slow burn, I love them, so so much. My favorite part is Halloween night and their nicknames, how they kept with them all night and even still two years later. Red and Captain are forever going to be a favorite couple of mine.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t already dying to get my hands on Damian…I mean his book, definitely his book…I love how in Southern Storms, Connor was the main side character and in Eastern Lights it was Damian. He’s going to hurt us, I can already feel it and I’m ready for it. Give me all the hurt Brittainy…I might regret that when I actually get my hands on his book, I’ll deal with the outcome later, with lots of tissues and chocolate.

Bet the Farm by Staci Hart [Release Blitz]

Olivia Brent has one summer to save the dairy farm she just inherited.

But there’s one problem, and it’s not her lactose intolerance.

Jake Milovic.

The brooding farmhand has inherited exactly fifty percent of Brent Farm, and he’s so convinced the city girl can’t work the land, he bets she can’t save it in a summer.

Determined to prove him wrong, Olivia accepts what might be the dumbest wager of her life.

His strategy to win seems simple: follow her around, shirtlessly distracting her between bouts of relentless taunting. And it’s effective—if his dark eyes and rare smiles aren’t enough to sidetrack her, the sweaty, rolling topography of the manbeast’s body would do the trick.

What they don’t know: they’ll have to weather more than each other.

Mysterious circumstances throw the farm into disarray, and with the dairy farm in danger, Olivia and Jake have to work together. But when they do, there’s more to fear than either of them imagined.

Because now their hearts are on the line, and the farm won’t be the only casualty if they fail.

Close Quarters by Kandi Steiner [Review]

Close Quarters
Kandi Steiner
February 18, 2021

My boyfriend’s billionaire boss always gets what he wants.⁣

Menacingly handsome and unquestionably powerful, Theo Whitman need only snap his fingers to have a flock of supermodels fall at his feet. So when his steel gray eyes first meet mine, I expect him to pass right over me, to not give so much as a second thought to my presence.⁣

Instead, he sees me. ⁣

Truly sees me. ⁣

And for a girl who prefers to hide behind her camera lens, it’s the most unnerving experience of my life.⁣

Until he asks me to stay on his yacht for the summer.⁣

⁣All I have to do to earn my keep is be Theo’s on-call photographer when he has guests, and I’ll get a free ride through the Mediterranean with my boyfriend. Easy peasy.⁣

⁣Still, my skin prickles in warning when I say yes.⁣

⁣As the humid days fade into balmy nights, I can’t seem to avoid Theo. And when he finds me, it’s like a rabbit running into a wolf.⁣

⁣His intense gaze immobilizes me. The way he speaks strips me bare. Every brush of his skin sears me like a violent flame.⁣

My boyfriend’s billionaire boss always gets what he wants.⁣

And this time, I think he wants me.

Close Quarters is a different genre than we’re used to from Kandi, but have no fear the angst is there, right along with the heat. I’m not going to lie, I kind of called some things from the prologue, though I definitely did not call everything and for that I’m very grateful.

What would a story be if you knew everything that would happen from the start? What would our lives be if we knew everything that would happen from the start? Everyone would have at least one thing they would change if they knew exactly how each event would impact their lives. What if we could see options, like little thought bubbles above our heads that would allow us to preview the path our life would take if we chose that one? I bet Aspen would have continued on with her life the exact way it happened in Close Quarters, she might change some things, but then again what is life with out learning from our past mistakes and life choices?

Aspen makes her fair share of mistakes, but that’s a part of life. In the end, we have a happy Aspen, with some unhappy characters that I hope choke and I’m not sorry about that. If you’ve read Close Quarters, then I feel its highly likely you know who I’m talking about and hopefully feel the same way. Luckily for all of us, they’re fictional characters.

Kandi Steiner, queen of angst and giving us all of the feels has made my wanderlust worse with this book. First, On the Way to You and now Close Quarters…If I didn’t want to see the world before these books, I definitely do now. I would quite literally like to go on the exact trips in these books, maybe a billionaire will read this and take me on his yacht? One can only hope.

Hi Mr. Billionaire, if you read this book, don’t worry not all of the events in Close Quarters will happen.

Back to Aspen and Theo, can we discuss the heat between them? Damn Aspen, I would have caved a long time before you, but things had to happen the way that they did in order for you to end up in the happily ever after and I’m okay with that. Kandi did an amazing job diving into a billionaire romance like this and I hope to see more from her.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed it to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

Aaliyah

His playful look shifted a bit as he looked my way and nibbled on his bottom lip. “So
there was a recent breakup.”
“He broke up with me about five weeks ago.”
“What an ass.”
“Yeah, but I love him. I wish I could say past tense, but here we are. My roommate
Sofia said the best way to get over a man is to get under another one, but I can’t even
consider that right now. The last thing I want to do is sleep with someone else.”
“Plus, sex wouldn’t fix a broken heart and—holy shit!” He clapped his hands
together and hopped up from the ground to a standing position. The grin on his face
was so big, but I didn’t understand what caused his sudden shift. “I got it, Red! I know
what we can do to help you.”
I arched an eyebrow and stood. “I’m confused.”
“I know, I know, and you’re going to think I’m crazy—which, maybe I am—but here’s
the deal: You can’t bang your way out of a heartbreak. That’s not how love works. Love
isn’t a physical connection; it’s an emotional one. Plus, after breakups, people replay
the good memories over the bad in their minds and start thinking they somehow failed,
when, in reality, the bad probably always outweighed the good. You simply held the
good tight in your grip because it was few and far between in the end. Otherwise, the
good would’ve been enough to keep you together.”

I hated that he was speaking facts. Over the past weeks, all I’d done was replay all
the good times Mario and I had together. My mind was stuck on a loop of moments that
meant the world to me in my past relationship.
There were only a handful of good memories, yet I simply played them on repeat,
making them feel bigger than they already were. Mario was a master at doing the bare
minimum, and I celebrated that fact as if he was a god. It wasn’t his fault he gave me
mediocre love. It was my fault for accepting it.
“So what’s your point?” I asked.
“Do you believe in destiny?”
I chuckled. “Don’t tell me you do.”
“I think everything happens for a reason, even if the reasoning isn’t clear as day
right away. Maybe that’s why we met tonight, Red, because we were meant to. Maybe I
had to get socked in the eye and whipped with a lasso because we were supposed to
cross paths so I could help you get over your ex.”
“How?”
“The best way to get over a love is to find a stronger connection with another
person. So, I present to you, your Halloween love story.” He took a bow as if he was
making any sense at all.
I stood still, confused as ever. “Am I missing something?”
“Clearly, because you’re looking at me as if I’m having a mental breakdown—which,
I mean, is probably accurate.” He cleared his throat and stood taller as he smoothed his
hands over his chest. “I’m asking you to fall in love with me.”
I snickered. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Give me the chance to make you fall in love with me before the sun comes up in
the next”—he glanced down at his phone—“five hours or so. It’s just past midnight. Give
me those hours to make you fall in love with me. Then we’ll end the love story on a
good note. No tragic heartbreak, no hard moments or relationship struggles. No
cheating or scandals. Just two people who fell in love, then life or, in our case, morning
made them say their goodbyes.”
“You really think two people can fall in love within five hours?”
“I don’t know.” He shrugged and held his hand out toward me. “Want to try?”
I should’ve said no. I should’ve laughed off his crazy idea and ended the night right
there on the rooftop, but I didn’t want to go home. I didn’t want to be alone. But most of
all, I wanted more time with Captain, even if only a few more hours. Even if there wasn’t
a real chance of me falling in love with him but just a chance of more time to feel happy.
Happy.
I felt happy.
I hadn’t even known how much I’d missed happiness until it found me that night.
So, I did what any insane girl would’ve done. I took his hand and agreed to the idea
of falling in love within the next five hours.
He clasped my fingers with his and pulled me in close to him. It was the closest
we’d stood since meeting, and the way he looked down into my eyes caused the
butterflies to intensify. He had to be well over six-foot-two as he hovered over my five-
foot-eight frame—and that was with heels. The way he looked at me made me feel
important, as if he was going to give this crazy plan of his all that he had.
“Knock, knock,” he said, with the goofiest grin known to mankind.

“Who’s there?”
“Will you fall in love with?”
“Will you fall in love with who?”
“Me.”

Can genuine love be found in the reality show bubble? Or are the relationships being formed doomed to fail? Follow from breakup to hookup and see if the final prize will be love… or lust?

Rachael Brownell is an award-winning author of young adult and new adult romance.

Rachael lives in Michigan with her husband, son, snuggly dog, and hateful cat. She moonlights as a bartender a few days a week (her excuse to get out of the house and socialize) and writes almost full time. Her first book was published way back in 2013 and since she’s released 30 additional titles. She writes all kinds of romance – dark, sexy, sweet.

When she’s not writing her next novel, you can find her hanging out with her family, watching her son play baseball, or running on the treadmill at the gym (though she skips more days than she goes). She also enjoys golfing but is still learning, so if you see her on the course… stand back.

I once met a man on a cold Halloween night. He dressed as a superhero, and I dressed
in red. For one night, I was his break from reality, and he was the temporary fix for my broken heart.

Two years later, I was given the opportunity of a lifetime to become a senior editor at
one of the biggest magazine companies in the world.
